The overall goal of my research is 1) to develop safe and effective medical devices, and 2) to regenerate functional human tissues by combining the principles of biomaterial science, 3D biofabrication, biological science, stem cell biology and engineering, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine with the advanced techniques in materials science and molecular and cell biology. The specific areas of my research cover 1) novel biomaterials and devices; 2) implant design and 3D printing; 3) stem cell biology and engineering; 4) regenerative medicine; 5) proteomics, biosensors, wireless and wearable devices, and medical imaging; and 6) in vitro and in vivo models for translational research. In this talk, I will discuss the details of several technologies from my over 100 inventions, including bioprinting technologies for tissue fabrication and drug screening, integrin recognition peptide arrays for stem cell research and tissue regeneration, antimicrobial but highly cytocompatible polymers for the prevention and control of infections, new nanomaterials for gene therapy and nanovaccination, and engineering approaches for the central nervous system regeneration, cardiovascular and lung tissue engineering, orthopedic tissue regeneration, and cancer in vivo targeting. Unique opportunities for further research will be identified in each of these areas.
