The College of Science of Donghua University was established in 1999 on the basis of the Department of Basic Teaching of the former Textile University of China. In 1977/1979, we began to recruit undergraduate students majoring in mathematics/physics. In 1981, it became one of the first units in the country to receive the right to grant master's degrees. The College consists of the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Applied Physics, and the Department of Optoelectronic Science and Engineering. There are three teaching platforms: “Mathematics Teaching and Research Center”, “Physics Teaching and Experimental Center” and “Mechanics Teaching and Research Center”. The college has three first-level discipline master's degree programs in mathematics, physics and optical engineering, one second-level discipline master's degree in solid mechanics, one professional master degree in applied statistics, one doctoral degree in new energy materials and device, and three joint construction doctoral programs with other colleges in science and engineering, materials science and engineering, environmental science and engineering. The college is led by Academician Junhao Chu of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. There are 108 full-time faculty members, including 27 professors (19 doctoral supervisors included) and 51 associate professors. The proportion of the faculty member with doctoral degree is over 76%. The proportion of the faculty member with more than one year of overseas academic experience is over 54%.

Department of Mathematics
Faculty: The Department of Mathematics now has 55 full-time faculty members, including 10 professors (7 doctoral supervisors included), 28 associate professors, 17 lecturers, about 60% of them have overseas academic experience. The famous Chinese Mathematician Daqian Li Academician is a distinguished professor of the department.
Specialty: The department has undergraduate majors in mathematics and applied mathematics (financial engineering) and has a master's degree of mathematics in a first-level discipline.
The department has undergraduate majors in Statistics (financial statistics and risk management) , has a professional master degree of applied statistics, and a joint construction master degree of first-level discipline mathematics with the department of mathematics.
Subject: The basic mathematical direction is characterized by studying the global well-posedness of the nonlinear evolution equation, the attractor and the piecewise smooth dynamic system. The applied mathematical direction is characterized by the study of cross-diffusion models with biological backgrounds and epidemic disease models. In recent years, we have undertaken more than 20 projects including the National Natural Science Foundation, the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission, and provincial and ministerial level projects; published more than 70 papers in the first and second districts in internationally important academic journals, and 13 papers in ESI Highly Cited Papers; published 5 academic monographs in Springer, and won the second prize of the Shanghai Natural Science Award. One professor was selected as a highly cited scientist in the world.

Faculty: The Department of Applied Physics now has 44 full-time faculty members, including 15 professors (11 doctoral supervisors included), 18 associate professors, 11 lecturers, over 80% of them have overseas academic experience.
Specialty: The department has an undergraduate major in Applied Physics (national specialty), a master degree program of Physics in a first-level discipline, an interdisciplinary doctoral program of 'New Energy Materials and Devices Physics', and a doctoral program of 'Materials Science and Engineering' co-operated with College of Materials.
Subject: In recent years, more than 30 projects have been undertaken, including National-973-Project, ITER project supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology, National Natural Science Foundation of China, and more than 100 papers indexed by SCI have been published.

The Institute for Nonlinear Science
The Institute for Nonlinear Sciences of Donghua University was established on October 16th, 2012. It aims to do creational interdisciplinary research, to promote academic exchanges and cooperations with international universities and institutes, to enhance academic level of nonlinear science theories world-widely, to educate high-level talents and develop leading academic groups. On the other hand, the institute sets up, on which researchers from all the different subjects within the university can carry out research and exchange in basic and applied sciences, enhance all subjects to intersect and interpenetrate with each other so that new scientific fields may emerge. In the meantime, the platform can also formulate a link with other universities and institutes in the scientific research. The Institute for Nonlinear Sciences is a relatively independent secondary institution of Donghua University, the director of which has overall responsibility under the leadership of the president and honorary director. The institute subordinates an expert advisory committee, a public research platform, as well as all kinds of offices. Magnetic Confinement Fusion Research Center of Ministry Education (Donghua University)
For promoting the magnetic confinement controlled fusion research, the Ministry of Education established the Magnetic Confinement Fusion Research Center on the day of March 28, 2008. Donghua University with Tsinghua University, Peking University, University of Science and Technology of China and others total ten universities became the members of the center, jointly together to boost the research and student training in fields relative to controlled fusion research with the aim to realize the peaceful utilizing of the nuclear energy for solving the coming energy crisis for whole human being. Since the establishment of the magnetic confinement fusion research center, we has undertaken more than ten projects of the National Basic Research Program, the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Key R&D Program of China and others, where the total budget has been more than 20 million yuan. The main researching topics of center are the physics and experiments in the tokamak plasma, the instabilities in plasma and its control, the advanced plasma diagnostic technology and the tokamak boundary physics. Our research center has established the excellent cooperative relationship with several distinguished domestic and international research institutes and universities, including the Institute of Plasma, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, Institute of Plasma, Helmholtz Association in Germany, ITER Center in France and the General Atomics in United States of America. The director of the Magnetic confinement Fusion ResearchCenter is Prof.Fangchuan Zhong, and the deputy director is Prof. Jianjun Shi.
